The Yucaipa High girls water polo team, led by 6-foot-1 sophomore goalkeeper Christine Carpenter, defeated Redlands 18-1 on Saturday, March 20 to finish 5-0 and wrap up the Citrus Belt League title.

“I’m excited,” Carpenter said of Yucaipa’s feat.

“It feels good. We’re all pretty happy.”

Redlands did not score until the final seconds.

Carpenter gave up just six goals in five league matches. She had seven saves against the Terriers.

Citrus Valley (4-1) came in second place, led by Ashley Williams who scored 16 goals during the league season.

In other league matches March 20, Beaumont defeated Redlands East Valley 23-4 and Citrus Valley downed Cajon 21-7.

REV claims championship

The Redlands East Valley boys’ water polo team captured the Citrus Belt League title of the abbreviated 2021 season by defeating Beaumont 18-2 on Thursday, March 18.

The victory came two days after the Wildcats (5-0) edged Yucaipa 10-9 to hand the Thunderbirds their only league loss.

Yucaipa finished 4-1 after defeating Redlands 17-7.

Blackhawks shine on, off field

Citrus Valley High baseball player Jacob Rivera has been named to the National High School Baseball Coaches’ Association Academic All-American Team, said a tweet by @CVBHawkBaseball.

On the field Citrus Valley scored four runs in the last two innings to defeat Palm Desert Xavier College Prep 4-3 on Saturday, March 20 in the RBI Tournament.

The Blackhawks’ Blake Griffey pitched six innings and struck out 10 while walking none in a no decision.

Jacob Jacome earned the pitching victory.

Matthew Mecate and Riley Hunsaker had two hits apiece for Citrus Valley.

Symetra Tour comes to Beaumont

Beaumont’s Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon is hosting the Symetra Tour’s sixth annual IOA Championship this week.

The “Road to the LPGA” event is presented by the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa and begins Friday, March 26, and runs through Sunday, March 28.

The 120-player field will vie for a total purse of $150,000.

Individuals are set to compete in a 54-hole stroke play format with a cut to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes.

The winner’s share is $22,500.

Defending champion Fátima Fernández Cano of Spain will attempt to defend her title in the event.

Play begins at 7:15 a.m. in the first and second round with play starting off No. 1 and No. 10 tees all three days.

The final round will start at 8 a.m. with a trophy presentation to follow on the 18th green.

ACA rolls past Western

The Arrowhead Christian Academy football team defeated host Western Christian 60-0 on Thursday, March 18.

The Eagles play visiting Ontario Christian at 3 p.m. Friday, March 26.

Bulldogs edge Cal Lutheran

Neil Owens made a layup and free throw with 10 seconds left to lift the University of Redlands men’s basketball team to a 98-97 overtime victory on Saturday, March 20, against Cal Lutheran.

Owens led all scorers with 33 points. The Bulldogs host Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 27.

La Sierra prevails

The University of Redlands women’s basketball team, despite 17 points from Alyssa Downs, fell to visiting La Sierra 67-62 on Saturday, March 20.

Downs is from South San Francisco and attended San Francisco St. Ignatius

College Prep.

Bulldog soccer team blanks Kingsmen

The University of Redlands men’s soccer team defeated visiting Cal Lutheran 3-0 on Friday, March 19.

Steve Acuna, Collin Chubb Fertal and Derrin Valeri all scored for the Bulldogs.

Fambro paces Redlands men’s golf

The University of Redlands men’s golf team finished second in the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Invitational March 15-16 with a two-day score of 620.

The Bulldogs’ Joshua Fambro had rounds of 70 and 77 for a two-day total of 147 to earn medalist honors.

Jugar leads Redlands women

The surging University of Redlands women’s golf team won the Cal Lutheran Regals Invitational held March 15-16. Redlands sophomore Hannah Jugar of Chula Vista shot rounds of 76-75 for a winning score of 151.
