Prep games, Friday schedule

Yucaipa (1-4) at Citrus Valley (5-0), 7 p.m.: An interesting score comparison: The Blackhawks destroyed Victorville Silverado by 41 points on Sept. 19. Eight days later, Silverado beat Yucaipa, 42-7. The T-Birds have sophomore RB Haiden Smith, who’s averaging close to 100 yards a game, to build around, but Wheatley & Co. loom like the major presence in this CBL opener.

Temecula Linfield (4-1) vs. Arrowhead Christian Academy (2-3) at San Gorgonio High School, 7 p.m.: The Wolverines’ only loss this season came at second-ranked (Div. 8) Aliso Niguel last week. The only team ranked ahead of the Wolverines is No. 1 San Gorgonio.

Redlands East Valley (0-5) at Redlands (1-4), 7 p.m.: Rivalry game between a pair of teams with second-year coaches, REV’s Rich Lunsford and RHS’ Mike McFarland, who each have highly competent junior QBs. Wildcats’ Jeramiah Donahue is nearing 1,000 yards off 63 completions, mainly to Brandon Wells and Xzavier McNabb. Terriers’ Trent Young has 54 completions for 671 yards, going to receivers like Kevin Character, Jamal Hines, Matthew Olivares and Adam Valencia plus a handful of others. Will the Wildcats’ tougher pre-season schedule be a factor against Redlands, which had an impressive win over No. 1-ranked San Gorgonio in last month’s season opener? To date, it’s the lone victory between the two teams. This game should be important for reasons beyond just rivalry implications: It could be a nice step toward a possible playoff berth if CBL outcomes are positive.

College, Saturday’s game

Pomona-Pitzer College (1-1) at University of Redlands (3-0), 7 p.m.: The Sagehens have come to life as an SCIAC contender in recent years, beating Lewis & Clark (Ore.) and losing to George Fox (Ore.) in non-conference play while coming off a bye. Expect lots of throws from QB Carter Odermann, who was 38-for-67 for 337 yards in the 26-15 loss to George Fox, three mis-throws going for interceptions. Watch for Odermann to take off with the ball, too.
