The CIF-Southern Section cross-country preliminaries were Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13, at Mt. San Antonio College’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.
Numerous area school competed.
The Citrus Valley boys in Division 2 finished fifth in their heat in the 3-mile run led by Ethan Romero who finished second in 15:56.2.
Jake Caliva was sixth in 16:12.4. Juan Montes was 40th in 17:39.6. Joseph Gaitan was 41st in 17:41.8, and Kalami Daniel was fifth-best among the Blackhawks, taking 43rd in 17:49.4. Romero was seventh overall, while Caliva was 17th-best.
The Aquinas boys finished seventh in their heat of D5 with Zach Calderon completing the 2-mile run in 14th in 12:21.8 and Joshua Bennett nabbing 16th in 12:24.2. In the merger of best times from the three heats, the Falcons finished 21st with 533 points. Calderon was 64th overall and Bennett 69th.
Packinghouse Christian in boys D4 finished 10th overall in the heat, led by Isaac Henry who finished 10th in 12:03 for two miles.
Citrus Valley in girls D2 placed fourth in Heat 1. Haillie Lomeli was sixth-best in 19:32.4. Gabrielle Romero was 13th in 20:17.2. Itzel Del Rio was 15th in 20:35.4. Haley Corbett was 54th in 23:39.1. Skyler Fry took 55th in 23:42.5.
When the heat times were merged, Citrus Valley finished 15th with 443 points. Lomeli was 18th and Romero was 42nd.
The Aquinas girls in D5 finished second in Heat 1 with 96 points, led by Mia Saenz who finished ninth in 14:30.6 for two miles. Isabelle Negrete was 17th in 15:13.9. Alyannah Lopez was 21st in 15:23.7.
Rosalie Guitron was 24th in 15:30.4. Erin Soto was fifth best in 15:34.7. When the heats were merged, Aquinas finished seventh overall with 249 points. Saenz placed 23rd and Negrete 46th.
The Redlands East Valley boys placed fifth with 123 points in D3.
Freshman Frank Rodriguez was the top finisher for REV in 10th place in 16:16.4 for three miles. Palmer Aguilar was 17th in 16:43.6, Sean Walker was 25th in 17:02.6. Jacob Ladd was 27th in 17:18.2. Corey Ford was 44th in 17:32.0. In the merger of heats, REV wound up in 12th place with 345 points.
Yucaipa in boys’ D3 placed 10th in Heat 3 with 260 points. Xander Markwan led the way with a 34th place finish in 17:05.0 over three miles. Chase Antinucci was 47th in 17:32.1. Riley Pearson was 53rd in 17:43.9. Xavier Cardenas was 61st in 18:09.5. Nick Schmidt was 65th in 18:19.4. In the merger of heats, Yucaipa finished 35th with 949 points.
Beaumont did not field a full team in boys’ D1. However, Marcus Shin competed as an individual and was 16th in his heat in 16:26.4.
The REV girls also did not field a full team in D3. In Heat 1, Meghan Walker finished 13th in 20:07.1 and Katie Hornung, the CBL champion, finished fourth in Heat 2 in 19:18.2.
San Gorgonio finished 14th in girls’ D3 with 393 points.
Beaumont in girls’ D1 finished seventh in its heat. Freshman Hannah Butterfield led the Cougars with a 23rd place finish in 20:48.6. Brook Biancaire was 31st in 20:56.8. Marianne Ruiz was 49th in 22;28.6. Haley Mayfield was 53rd in 23:59.9. Diana Collier was 56th in 23:22.1.
In the merger of heats, Beaumont finished 26th overall with 770 points.
Yucaipa finished third in Heat No. 3 of girls’ D3. Taylor Becker finished sixth to lead the T-Birds at 19:24.1. Tiffany Terry was 18th in 20:28.9, Cali Good was 19th in 20:32.2. Savannah Gardner was 27th in 20:50.5, and Lea Marian was 28th in 20:56.8. In the merger of heads, Yucaipa finished 10th with 352 points.
The CIF-SS finals are Saturday, Nov. 20, again at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. SAC.
