Re: “Righteous Brothers rock the bowl,” Shantell Sunderman, July 8.

Last week’s article by Shantell Sunderman about the Redlands Bowl Righteous Brothers concert on July 5 was excellent.

I’m sure Sunderman’s comprehensive review of the songs performed, including lots of historical context, provided yet another activation of nostalgia for many readers. Also described was the charming banter between Bill Medley and his sidekick Bucky Heard.

In both the Righteous Brothers’ talk and the words in their songs, the overriding sentiment was all about love. It was easy for Medley to say, ”I love you, brother.”

What the article left out, though, was what Tim Rochford — who with his wife Carol sponsored the entire concert as a gift to the community —announced to the audience before the performance: that the evening was dedicated to military veterans, to acknowledge and honor them for their sacrifices and service. When Rochford asked all veterans present to stand — and there were lots of them — he told the audience, “Look around,…you are surrounded by heroes.”

The crowd’s resounding applause was saying to each of those vets: “We love you.”
