Anne Marie Derfer, who taught in the Redlands and Moreno Valley school districts for 25 years, died on Dec. 10, 2019, at Redlands Community Hospital after a serious fall.
She was the daughter of George and Naomi Hollenberg, both longtime residents of Redlands, and lived in Redlands for almost her entire life. She grew up in a Victorian home on Cajon Street that has since been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
She attended Kingsbury Elementary School, Redlands Junior High and Redlands High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Redlands in 1955. She later earned a master’s in education from the U of R. She was a member of Tri-Delta Sorority and Honor Society and was active in the American Association of University Women. After she retired in 1994 she continued to serve as a teacher’s mentor.
In 1955, she married George Derfer, a philosophy of religion professor at the University of Redlands and Cal Poly Pomona.
She is survived by her three children, Greg, Karen and Brian, her brother Lee Hollenberg and her sister Donna Taylor.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel.
