Joan E. Nelson, former personnel manager at Harris Co. in Redlands and an active member of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce, died on Sept. 9, 2019. She was 85.
Born on March 21, 1934, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Burdette and Florence Peterson, she graduated from Worthington High School in 1952 and married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Nelson, on Dec. 28, 1952.
The Nelsons moved to Redlands in 1967. Nelson also was a member of Redlands 2000, a committee formed by then-Mayor Carole Beswick to prepare for the new millennium.
As a member of American Business Women’s Association, Joan received the ABWA Woman of the Year in 1981 and businesswoman of the year in 1990. The Nelsons ran the Bootery in Redlands, which featured a merry-go-ground, until they retired in 1999.
Joan Nelson is survived by her husband Tom, daughter Vicki of Santa Rosa, son Craig of Chino Hills and brother Donald Peterson of Manteca, California. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave., Redlands.
