Sally Jean Lucero dies at 59

Sally Jean Lucero, who was active with Redlands Unified School District as an employee and longtime volunteer, died of a brain aneurysm April 28 surrounded by family. She was 59.

Born Oct. 28, 1961, in Loma Linda, Sally was one of 12 children of Tony and Cecilia “Cha Cha” Garcia. She graduated from Redlands High School, where she was a cheerleader, in 1979. She attended Crafton Hills College.

Along with her husband Conrad, she once owned and managed Ceramic Zone in Redlands and was a member of the Contemporary Ceramic Studios Association.

At the time of her death, she worked as a dental assistant and office manager at Dr. Conrad Lucero’s Family Dentistry in Redlands, and as a substitute office attendant with Redlands Unified School District.

She was an active parent volunteer, serving on the PTAs at Mariposa Elementary, Moore Middle School and Redlands East Valley High School, and also as a band booster at REV and Moore, where she was the club secretary. She was honored with a PTA Service Award. She remained close with her fellow volunteers even after all of their children had grown, and considered them extended family.

She was a cyclist, and was a member of the Ride Yourself Fit Bicycle Club.

She also loved spending time with her family, gardening, walking, hiking, crafting, cooking, traveling and caring for dogs.

She attended Holy Name of Jesus in Redlands.

In addition to Conrad, her husband of 29 years, she is survived by her daughter and son-in law Amanda and Jeff Bates of Carnelian Bay; daughter and son-in-law Chelsea Lucero and Aric Perez of San Francisco, and son Phillip Lucero of Los Angeles; granddaughter Ellisyn Bates; mother-in-law Gloria Lucero of Colton; sisters Nancy Boeger, Cathy Kevari, Patricia Jackson, Betty Keeling and Laura Beighey of Redlands, Carole Miller of Torrance and Monica Hally of Pharma, Ohio; and brothers Tim Garcia of Redlands, Thomas Garcia of Taos, New Mexico, and Ernie Garcia of Indio.

She was preceded in death by her brother Tony Garcia, and her father-in-law Joe Lucero.

Following a private memorial Mass, a celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Edwards Mansion in Redlands. Attendees will be asked to wear masks and show a record of vaccination or a 72-hour recent negative COVID test. Sunset Funeral Care is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Sally Lucero Scholarship Fund through GoFundMe.
