Lawrence “Larry” Gene Philibert, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, died on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at home in Redlands after an illness. He was 72.
Born and raised in Southern California, he was the son of Leo and Lois Philibert. After graduating from high school, Philibert joined the Air Force and married Bonita Nikolaus. They were sent to Terrejon Air Force Base in Spain where he was an aircraft maintenance specialist. He traveled between Spain and Turkey fixing various aircraft including the F-100.
Upon returning home in 1970 with an honorable discharge, Philibert joined his father at the Southern Pacific Railroad.
He worked for the railroad for more than 30 years, retiring as a brakeman/conductor. Philibert was a ham radio operator.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Bonita; his two children, Gena Philibert-Ortega and Jason Philibert; and three grandsons, Daniel Ortega, Brandon Ortega and Nicolau Philibert.
Services and burial will be conducted at the Riverside National Cemetery.
