Redlands police arrested a 23-year-old Redlands man for attempted murder after the man fired a handgun inside an apartment Tuesday afternoon, June 15.
Police responded shortly before 12:30 p.m. to reports of shots fired and a man with a gun at an apartment complex in the 27000 block of West Lugonia Avenue.
The suspect, Jelani Anthony Smith, reportedly fired multiple shots from a handgun at a female acquaintance as she fled the apartment following a dispute. Several bullets went through the wall and into another apartment that was also occupied. No one in either apartment was hit.
The suspect chased the victim out to the street brandishing the gun. She fled to safety in a nearby building. Smith then returned to the apartment.
Police set up a perimeter around the building and attempted to contact Smith at his apartment.
When he exited the apartment, officers were able to negotiate his surrender and took him into custody without further incident.
Smith is being held at West Valley Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bail on charges of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied dwelling and assault with a firearm.
