Meals on Wheels

For 31 years Emmaus Church Redlands (formerly Bethany Church) has provided Thanksgiving dinners to the Meals on Wheels recipients that cannot leave their homes and have no family nearby to provide a Thanksgiving meal.

In May 1988. the Caring Committee of Bethany Church, headed by Trudy Waldron, proposed to the Consistory of Bethany that the church “present the city of Redlands a Centennial Gift of a Thanksgiving Dinner to those unable to provide for themselves.”

The proposal was approved and the tradition began. The only year it was not served was, of course, 2020. This year we served 50 to 60 Meals to shut-ins, down a bit from the typical 60 to 70.

We start by contacting Meals on Wheels organization in August and assure them that we will provide the dinners on Thanksgiving, the only day of the year that amazing organization does not serve a meal.

Then the necessary food and preparations are bought to provide a complete traditional dinner with all the trimmings from turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy to pumpkin pie. The church volunteers are signed up: buyers, cooks, those who prepare and pack the dinners and the drivers who deliver the meals; hot and ready to eat by 12:30 on Thanksgiving Day. Finally, to finish up, the clean-up crew will complete the job, all on their way home or to their Thanksgiving destination by 12:30.

For 31 years our Church has been blessed to be able to help the City of Redlands in this small way. If you’d like to find out more, we invite you to join us on Sundays at 9:30am or visit our website at Emmaus Church 705 Cajon Street, 909-503-9363.
