U.S. Rep. Jay Obernolte reports that his area, the vast 8th District north and east of Redlands, is feeling the impact of increasing illegal crossings at the U.S./Mexico border.
“The flow of undocumented immigrants across our southern border has increased to more than 500,000 illegal people in 2021,” he said in an introduction to a survey on illegal immigration by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
“California’s 8th District is feeling the impacts of the crisis on our streets despite our distance from the border. In San Bernardino County, reports of smuggling for labor and sex trafficking have already exceeded the total number of incidents reported in 2020.
“In the first two quarters of 2021, 340 pounds of fentanyl equating over 1.5 million pills were seized in that county alone,” Obernolte writes. “I need to hear from you on this important issue.”
He asks his constituents to choose one of the four responses.
• Secure our southern border.
• Legalize more drugs in the United States.
• Address humanitarian needs in Central and South America.
