Twelve students are recognized for their contribution to the Student Spaceflight Experiment Program Mission 14.

The Redlands Unified School District has many students going above and beyond in school and life.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the district honored some of its distinguished students at its board meeting.

High school students Nathan Lewis and Jared Laing completed their community projects to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Lewis assembled hygiene packages at Angel View Nursing Home.

Laing refinished benches and tables at a park.

“To be an Eagle Scout is a huge honor,” said Laing.

Redlands High School students Vidhi and Varun Srivastava were recognized for their outstanding achievements in technology.

Vidhi Srivastava was selected as the 2020 National Honorable Mention of the National Center for Women and Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing.

She has also won a scholarship to participate in a summer program at the University of California, Riverside.

“I truly believe computer science will extend opportunities to students in our generation,” she said.

Varun Srivastava won the 2019 Congressional App Challenge for California’s 31st Congressional District. His app educates users about climate change while helping them monitor their carbon footprint.

Students who were a part of Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission 14 were honored for being finalists in the Experiment Design Competition and Flight Phase to International Space Station.

Four of the 12 students were selected to have their experiment aboard a flight to the International Space Station.

Redlands High School teacher Donna St. George won teacher of the month for her impressive leadership in Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon and AP U.S. History.

“Students say St. George is not an easy teacher, but she is an inspirational one,” said Patty Holohan, school board president.

St. George’s 2019 AP U.S. History class had a 98 percent pass rate on the national exam.

St. George is also the leader of Redlands High’s Mock Trial and Academic Decathlon teams. Mock Trial has won the county championship 16 times with two state titles. Academic Decathlon has won the county championship 14 times.

Both teams are advancing to the state championships after county wins this year.

Redlands Mock Trial took home over 20 awards for its county championship run. Academic Decathlon also took home over 20 awards, each student taking home at least two.
