Two local high school students have been named 2020 Youth of the Year Ambassadors for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Redlands-Riverside.

The Ambassadors — Jocelyn Perez and Hilda Cabanillas — were chosen for their character and citizenship, academics and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. They each wrote essays on three topics — club experience, their personal brand and their vision for America’s youth — gave a short speech on how the club has impacted them, and were interviewed by a panel of judges from the community.

The ambassadors will serve as spokeswomen for the clubs, and receive college scholarships. The judges chose Jocelyn as the club’s 2020 Youth of the Year. She won the Youth of the Year competition against other Boys & Girls Clubs in March, and will compete in the state contest – remotely — on April 15.

Jocelyn, a senior at Centennial High School in Corona, said the club gave her the confidence to speak up for herself. Hilda Cabanillas is the club’s Youth of the Year Ambassador.

Hilda wants to be a pediatric nurse. Youth of the Year is a national program of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and recognizes high school-age youth who embody the Club’s mission to mold productive, caring, responsible citizens.
