Treasure Owens

Artist Jeff Owens, right, and Nathan Gonzales, A.K. Smiley Public Library Heritage Room archivist and Museum of Redlands staff liaison, welcome back to Redlands two of Owens' early watercolors donated in March by Mark Rogers now of Ordway, Colorado.

Artists Jeff Owens and Mark Rogers were teachers and track coaches at Clement Junior High School in the 1970s when Owens first began seriously selling his artwork. Rogers became an early fan — and the citrus crate boxes are the first of that iconic series that Owens painted. The round hitching post still stands on High Street a block from Sylvan Park, one of few that still have the original ring for tying up horses.

Rogers wanted the paintings to come back to Redlands and Owens suggested they go to the Museum of Redlands and helped with shipping costs to get them here.

Those who have historical Redlands-area-related objects to donate to the museum can contact the Heritage Room at (909) 798-7632.
