Redlands Bowl Performing Arts has selected “Hello, Dolly!” as the musical for the 100th season of the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. The show will be produced by Nathan Prince and Steve Simons of Legendary Productions and directed by Prince. Prince and Simons and their team also produced and directed 2016’s “Oklahoma!” and 2019’s “Singin’ in the Rain.”
“We are excited to welcome the Legendary Productions producer/director team of Nathan Prince and Steve Simons back to the Redlands Bowl stage,” said program director Valerie Peister. “They are gifted in both bringing a fresh approach to the grand classics and bringing them to life for new generations. We know they’ll bring this magic combination to the centennial bowl season.”
“Steve and I are so excited and overjoyed to be a part of the centennial celebration for Redlands Bowl Performing Arts,” said Prince. “We are looking forward to bringing a modern touch to a beautiful classic. Our production team is made up of some of the best talent in the industry ranging from Broadway, film, television and stages around the world.”
“We are thrilled to be presenting ‘Hello Dolly!’” said Redlands Bowl Performing Arts Executive Director Beverly Noerr. “The show is glamorous, grand and great fun, so befitting for the bowl’s historic centennial year. With its recent reprisal on Broadway, we feel it’s a perfect time to introduce this beloved classic.”
“Hello, Dolly!” is a 10-time Tony Award winning 1964 musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. Carol Channing debuted the Broadway role of Dolly Levi. The 1969 movie adaptation directed by Gene Kelly and starring Barbra Streisand went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning three.
“Hello, Dolly!” has been performed at the Redlands Bowl only one other time, in 1990. Until 2013, it held the record of garnering the bowl’s highest freewill offering and featured Redlands’ former mayor Carole Beswick in the role of Dolly.
Dolly Gallagher Levi is a widow, a matchmaker and a professional meddler. Everything changes when she decides the next match she needs to make is one for herself. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, “Hello, Dolly!” is boisterous and charming from start to finish. “Hello, Dolly!” features such memorable songs as “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment” and the iconic “Hello, Dolly!”
