Great horned owl seen near Hillside Memorial Park

Brad Willason has five owls that have settled into his “lower backyard” of his 3-acre property off West Sunset Drive. He believes there are a pair of adults and three juveniles. They come out in the late afternoon and in the evening to catch gophers. Willason put up an 8-foot raptor perch about two weeks ago when he saw the owls in the neighborhood. He shot the picture with a telephoto lens from about 75 feet away — “A good view of those talons, as well as those eyes checking me out,” he said.

Not far away, Greg Shaughnessy shot this great horned owl at sunset with a 70-300-millimeter lens on Rebecca Crest near Hillside Memorial Park.
