Correction: Shiprock on Hwy 111 west of Palm Springs

Shiprock is a rock formation off Highway 111 between Whitewater and Palm Springs. Waymarking.com reports that the plaque says its geology is much different that is gigantic neighbor, Mount San Jacinto, which formed at the bottom of a prehistoric tropical sea 250 million years ago. The plaque speculates that as Mount San Jacinto moved northward for thousands of miles along the west side of the San Andreas Fault, which metamorphosed the rocky formation from the late Paleozoic Era. It is known by the Cahuilla people as “kista cavel” or “sharp pointed rocks.”
